Harold Engel

A Wisconsin public broadcasting pioneer, Harold Engel's career at WHA-AM and the University of Wisconsin-Madison, spanned from 1931-68. In 1933, he conceived and developed the Wisconsin College of the Air as a post-high school educational opportunity. In the mid 1930's he created the first successful political broadcasting model, "The Political Education Forum" which provided free campaign air time to candidates for state office on equal time basis. From 1946-57, he guided the building of Wisconsin's public broadcasting FM network. He twice served as President of the National Association of Educational Broadcasters, in 1941-42 and in 1946-48. Prof. Engel died in 1985.
