The Wisconsin Broadcasters Association
Foundation contribution to broadcasting in Wisconsin
encompasses a strategic, long term vision for enhancing,
promoting and supporting the broadcast industry by
encouraging the preservation of broadcast history,
participating in public affairs activities in the State
of Wisconsin and providing educational opportunities for
professional broadcasters and those who seek future
careers in the broadcast industry.
STUDENT SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM
WBA Foundation 2013 Scholarships Awards
A total of
four WBA Foundation scholarship awards were
presented on March 2 at the 2013 WBA Student
Seminar. This year’s winners were: Christopher
Vosters, Daniel Waterman, Brandon Kinnard and
Jocelyn Van Beek.
Christopher Vosters, UW-Madison, received the
$2,000 WBA Foundation Scholarship; Jocelyn Van
Beek, UW-Madison, was named the Morgan Murphy
Scholar and received a $2,000 Scholarship;
Brandon Kinnard, UW-Oshkosh, received the $1,000
Results Broadcasting Scholarship; and Daniel
Waterman, UW-Stevens Point, received the $1,000
Howard Gernetzke Scholarship.
The WBA Foundation awards the scholarships
annually. One of the awards is funded by
donations to the Foundation; the Morgan Murphy
Scholarship is endowed by WISC-TV, Madison. It
was created in honor of the late Morgan Murphy,
who founded the Superior Evening Telegram, owner
of WISC-TV. Recipients of this scholarship are
chosen for their credentials and academic
achievements as well as their ties to the
Channel Three viewing area. The Howard Gernetzke
Scholarship, which was presented for the first
time in 1998, is endowed by friends and
relatives of Howard Gernetzke. It was created in
honor of the late Howard Gernetzke, who was a
longtime Wausau and Milwaukee radio & television
personality. Recipients of this scholarship are
chosen for their credentials and academic
achievements as well as their ties to the
Central Wisconsin broadcast market. The Results
Broadcasting Scholarship was presented for the
first time in 2005. Bruce Grassman, President of
Results Broadcasting pledged to endow a
scholarship under the Foundation’s Scholarship
Program. Grassman is the longtime owner/manager
of Results Broadcasting, with stations in
Antigo, Clintonville, Shawano, Rhinelander, as
well as Iron Mountain, MI. In making the
endowment, Grassman said that he “wanted very
much to give something back to the industry that
has given me so much. Hopefully, making my gift
in this way will help the industry continue to
flourish in future years.”
To be
eligible, students must have completed at least
one-half of their degree or graduation
requirements in broadcast or a broadcast-related
course of study. Applicants must be attending a
Higher Educational Institution in Wisconsin that
has been designated as eligible by the WBA
Foundation Board. List of eligible schools is
listed below.
Recipients of all scholarships are selected
through a competition judged by the WBA
Education Committee and the WBA Foundation Board
of Directors. In addition, as part of the WBA’s
Assistance Action Plan for EEO Compliance, our
members were given the chance to use our
Scholarship program to help them gain EEO
credit. Amongst other requirements, they were
asked to make an initial evaluation of the
scholarship candidates. Judging is based on
credentials, academic achievements and
recommendations.

Brandon Kinnard
Results
Broadcasting Scholarship
After graduating from
Luxemburg-Casco High School in
Luxemburg, Brandon made his way to
UW–Oshkosh where he is focusing on
Radio/TV/Film. He plans to graduate in
December.
Brandon has held
student leadership positions at WRST FM
and Titan TV at UW-Oshkosh. His
accomplishments include: Sports Director
and Programming Director at 90.3 WRST;
Play-by-Play Broadcaster and Media
Relations Assistant for the Green Bay
Bullfrogs of Northwoods League;
Play-by-Play Broadcaster and Sales
Representative for Luxemburg-Casco Boys
and Girls basketball heard on WBDK.
Brandon has been
recognized for Awards and Honors such
as: WBA Student Awards, National
Finalist for 2 CBI Awards, Grand Prize
Winner for 2 NBS awards, 2 Awards of
Merit from NBNA, and recognition from
SPG and BEA. All of these honors are in
sports-related categories in radio and
television.
His Career Goal is to
perform radio and/or television
Play-by-Play and media relations duties
for a high level minor league baseball
team or a Division 1 college basketball,
football, or baseball team.
Jocelyn Van Beek Morgan
Murphy
Scholarship
Jocelyn is a graduate of
Peshtigo High School in Peshtigo, WI.
She is currently majoring in Journalism
and Mass Communications at UW-Madison.
Jocelyn will graduate in December of
2013 and currently carries a 3.9 grade
point average.
Her broadcast experience includes: WSUM
News Anchor, Reporter, Engineer and WSUM
Radio Talk Show Host. She served as an
Intern for FOX in Chicago. While there
she researched trending topics and
pitched potential story ideas to the
morning news team. She helped to produce
traffic segments, wrote scripts and
performed standup packages.
Jocelyn is a member of the Association
for Women in Communications and a
Madison 5K Literacy volunteer. You will
find Jocelyn's name on the Spring 2012
and Fall 2011 Dean’s list at UW-Madison.
Jocelyn’s career goal is: “I want to
intern with Madison’s Channel 3000
during my last semester at UW as a
reporter. I will continue to broaden my
reporting knowledge and put together a
reel. After school, I will apply for
various TV reporting job openings around
the country. I plan on working in a
small market at first but then will be
open to moving later in order to advance
my career. Ideally, I would love to
report for a network news channel
someday.”
Christopher Vosters WBA Foundation
Scholarship
Christopher is a graduate
of Brookfield East High School in
Brookfield, WI. He is currently enrolled
at UW-Madison where he is majoring in
Journalism. Christopher will graduate in
May of 2013.
Christopher’s
accomplishments include: Dean’s list 4
semesters; UW-Journalism School
Scholarship recipient and 5 time winner
of WBA Student Awards for Excellence. He
has held the position of News Director
at WSUM. Currently he is a Show Host and
Sports Director at WSUM 91.7. As Sports
Director at WSUM he has covered
play-by-play for football, hockey,
basketball and softball. As an intern he
was the Play-by-Play Announcer for the
Lakeshore Chinooks Northwoods League
Baseball webcasts. Christopher is also
an Eagle Scout.
Christopher’s Career
Goal is to be a Sportscaster or
Play-by-Play Announcer in radio or TV.
Daniel Waterman Howard Gernetzke Scholarship
Daniel is a graduate
at Appleton West High School. He is
currently enrolled at UW - Stevens Point
and plans to graduate in May of 2014.
Daniel is majoring in
Communications with a Media Studies
Emphasis.
In his spare time Daniel has logged over
250 hours of DJ experience and has over
150 hours of studio experience as
Production Director at 90 FM. As a
volunteer at 90 FM he has DJ’d; and
worked in: News, Production, Promotion,
Fund Raising and Music Review. He also
works with choreographers editing and
producing music for Afterimages.
Daniel has received 90 FM Staff Member
of the year; Friends of 90 FM and
Highest Academic Honors.
Daniels career goal is
to produce high quality content for
television, radio or film.
The Wisconsin Broadcasters Association
Foundation offers two $2,000 scholarships and
two $1,000 scholarships to assist students
enrolled in broadcasting-related educational
programs at public or private
colleges/universities, broadcast/media schools
and Wisconsin Technical College. Students who
meet eligibility requirements are encouraged to
apply for these scholarships.
